I read this book based on all the intriguing reviews. I wasn’t a fan of The Headmistress and honestly as I started reading this one, I felt it was overwritten but I stuck with it because of the reviews. And boy am I glad I did! The last 30% is a hell of a ride. This is a different style of romance than I’m used to. The characters are already together and the MC fights her attraction for most of the book while on a journey of self realization and overcoming trauma. Unlike many books with a quintessential ice queen, this one is told from her perspective, which is a nice twist. But one thing I did not enjoy was the breaking of the 4th wall- it felt overdone and unnecessary. I also struggled to get through the first half- it was slower and arduous, and I felt it could have been a lot shorter. Some of the steamy scenes also felt gratuitous and there were times I wanted more from their relationship than sex. That said, in the end, I understand why McKay did it. This book is all about character building and understanding the mind of a tortured soul. It’s worth the read in the end.
Short summary: Neve is the head of a top movie making studio. She has everything she’s ever wanted and she’ll be damned if she lets love get in the way. If only she could quit Audrey that easily.
