Author’s final note: “It’s always a good day to hex the patriarchy.” Amen. I really enjoyed this book. I couldn’t put it down. The story, characters, history, magic system and themes were all so well-woven together. Only two things slowed it down for me- having so many points of view got a bit clunky, though it was interesting. The second thing was that a lot of the sexual references felt gratuitous. I’m assuming it’s a commentary on human nature…and our so human nature, but it missed the mark for me. I also wanted a bit more from the end. But, I loved the characters. Stella is dynamite, but Lucky is too. It was nice how diverse the cast was and of course I love reading about powerful women reclaiming their power. Queer rep: lesbians, transwoman, bisexual man.

Short summary: Lucky is running out of luck, at a dead-end job, about to lose her home as her grandma is about to lose her mind. Until she finds a spoon. A very specific old-timey spoon with Salem marked on it. The spoon leads her to a group of witches, looking for other witches to complete their coven and secure their power. There’s a deadline, a road trip and a deadly hunter. Will they make it in time?
