I really enjoyed the questions raised by this book. It’s an omniscient POV following two parents and their five children, but mostly it’s from the mother’s perspective as she attempts to raise her trans daughter and all the challenges and wonders that poses. Woven throughout is a fairytale the author invented that’s a fabulous and creative metaphor for everything else playing out. The parents are a realist and a dreamer who both love their child which makes for interesting dialogue. There were times it felt a little long and I wish the ending had gone much further, but it’s a beautiful look at how a family might operate.

Great quote: “Wider ranges of normal make the world a better place for everyone.”

Short summary: the novel is literary, meaning it follows the characters’ internal journeys more than a plot, but essentially it’s the story of how one family raises and embraces their trans (non-binary?) daughter in the US.
