This book had me on the edge of my seat! It felt like the vampire version of Hunger Games. It took me a minute to get into it, but once she gets to the trials I was hooked. And Raihn..steadfast and steamy. The only thing I struggled with was the backstory. Why were the trials necessary? What are the rules of the world in terms of magic wielding? What was the history between the clans- why are they at war? I wanted a little more of everyone’s history…which I’m hoping to see in book 2. Queer rep: vague reference to a lesbian couple.

Short summary: Despite being human, Oraya has trained her whole life to compete in the Kejari- a fight to the death tournament with other vampires.
