I picked this up after enjoying an interview with the author on The Shit No One Tells You About Writing podcast, and I’m so glad I did. The tension, the drama, the stakes!! It was great to read as an aspiring writer, and fun as a reader. The issues between each family member felt realistic to me and I liked that the author went to uncomfortable places. Though some of the anger might have been misplaced, and I questioned some of the ending, I liked how raw it was. Queer rep: gay side character.

Short summary: Amanda is desperate. Her life is stagnant and her family’s business is struggling, so she applies to Food Wars to fix all her problems. But when the cameras arrive, along with the prodigal sister who hasn’t been back in 6 years, more gets fried than chicken.
