This book definitely kept me reading. I liked the concept and the parallels with religion and sexuality. The intrigue was there too. There were two things that kept it at 3 stars for me: first, each turning point felt too abrupt almost like a box being checked; second, Denna being 16 and betrothed was tough- everything was kept age appropriate but since the story didn’t hinge on her age I just kept wondering why she couldn’t at least be 18, especially since Mare was. So while I did enjoy it- especially the magical elements, there were things that frustrated me and the pacing of the romance ultimately felt stilted.

Short summary: When Denna first meets her future husband, it’s fine but what she notices most is his sister- the wayward princess with a knack for horses who ignites a feeling of passion in Denna. But the kingdom is soon in turmoil and they're hunting people with magical powers- can Denna keep all her secrets close enough to the chest to survive til her wedding…does she want to?
