I’m medium about this book because while it’s well written and the moral is intriguing, I had a really hard time liking the main character. I think her unlikeability is part of the point but she never redeemed herself in my view. I liked Sophie at first, but she’s also manipulative and though it makes sense with her history, it’s questionable. Ralph was clever and endearing. I don’t love horror so I was glad that this was much more funny/wry than scary. But yeah, there were scenes I could have skipped, lots of plot holes, and plenty of moments where I was yelling at the protagonist…which might be the point and means the author actually did a great job, but unfortunately it missed the mark for me personally. So I’m squarely in the middle.

Short summary: When Annie’s long term boyfriend breaks up with her after nearly a decade, she’s devastated. It’s not what she wants but she doesn’t know how to vocalize that so she leaves, moving to a very small town that seems magical. She makes a new friend almost immediately who seems too good to be true but the townspeople are wary of her, and things start to happen that are hard to explain…
